In 1884 Indian Rock, Arizona Territory, Angus McKettrick is irate with his three adult children as none of them remember his birthday. Hurt, he tells his three sons that the first to marry and have a child will inherit the ranch. The oldest son Rafe sends for a mail order bride.
In Kansas City, Emmeline Harding lives with her Aunt Becky in the latter's boarding house that is really a whorehouse. Emmeline normally stays away from the customers, but meets a Texan, gets drunk, and has sex for the first time. An upset Becky throws Emmeline out of the house. Emmeline answers an ad and marries Rafe by proxy. She informs Becky that she is leaving to join her husband.
Emmeline travels to Indian Rock but she keeps secret from Rafe that she grew up in a brothel and had sex once like a whore. When his half-brother arrives, she realizes he is the man she had sex with. Emmeline falls in love with Rafe and tells him the truth about her background. Rafe angrily leaves so Emmeline moves off the ranch leaving little hope for this couple to find happiness together
HIGH COUNTRY BRIDE is an entertaining western historical romance that is superb when the story line focuses on the lead couple. However, the introduction of sidebars that seem to predominantly introduce other characters for future books slows down the strong prime theme. Still readers will delight with the antics of the lead couple and look forward to Linda Lael Miller telling the tales of Rafe's brothers, Kade, and Jeb.

Angus McKettrick, melancholy over yet another birthday without grandchildren to bounce on his knee, has made a decision. His three rowdy sons need to settle down, and he lays down a challenge. The first one to marry AND produce a grandchild, boy or girl, will inherit the majority of the Triple M ranch. The young men are stunned, angry, and each is determined to be the winner of this "contest." Rafe, the eldest, feels Angus's decision is unfair. To lose his inherited right to head up the ranch's operation would tear him apart. So he reluctantly gives up his freedonm and sends off for a mail order bride.
Emmeline Harding can't hold her liquor. She doesn't find this out until after she wakes up in her aunt's brothel with a pile of gold coins on the nightstand beside her bed. Fearing the worst, Emmeline flees town as a mail-order bride. But will she have to confess her dubious past to her unseen husband?
A wonderful tale begins right from the start of this novel. Each character, including the secondary characters, is well drawn. The plot is believable and keeps the pages turning. The only thing I would have liked to see is more of Rafe! It is a little weighted on the inner conflict of Emmeline. Otherwise, a great read!

I read this on my Kindle, so maybe in printed form it has some separations between scenes - but I doubt it. Sometimes it felt like "cut and paste" was the method used to arrange the story. It felt choppy and the timeline seemed misplaced in a few spots. I loved the characters and the story was well thought out, except the scenes ran together.

It has been a long time since I have read such a fun, and interesting romance novel!!!!! I felt like this broke the mold of your normal average historical romance. Fast paced, Interesting story, one of the few that didn't bore me with sub-story lines and forced mystery. The only mystery here? "are these two going to actually make it?" Most books of this catagory are very predictable, always leading up to a big climax that falls short of really surprising anyone. THIS BOOK IS NOT THAT WAY! I rushed out and got the second in the series ( SHOT GUN BRIDE) and I'm sad to say... it was SOOOOOOO boring I had to force myself to stay with it.. I am about to read the third and I AM HOPING that MILLER gets back on track! Sometimes I feel like her books are rushed and thrown together, not very well thought out... a result of pumping out too many novels! BUT PLEASE READ THIS ONE IT IS A WONDERFUL ESCAPE !!!!!!

The beginning of this book was really good, and I had high hopes that the rest of the book would be as good, but I was somewhat disappointed.

I know the book is just fiction, but when I read something, I don't like discrepancies. They are distracting. For instance, when Rafe wraps her in the bath towel, takes her upstairs where he lays her down on the bed. Then he removes her nightgown. Huh? When did she put on the nightgown?

There were other parts of this story that didn't make any sense to me, but overall, it was Okay.

Emmeline Harding grew up in a brothel, shielded by her loving & protective aunt (the madam). One night she decides to don sexy clothes and get a glimpse of the world of the ladies of the night. She meets a handsome stranger, drinks too much wine & wakes up in a bed, with a handful of gold coins left for her. She decides to change her life, and ansers an ad from the Happy Home Matrimonial Service. She is married by proxy and goes out west to meet her groom. Rafe McKettrick, has lead a life of carousing. Now, the only wat he can inherit the triple M ranch is to produce a legetimate grandchild. He requests a mail order bride "healthy, with good teeth. must want children. soon." What he gets goes far beyond his request, as Emmeline and Rafe fall madly in love.

Sensuality rating = 7

The first in a new series, HIGH COUNTRY BRIDE was a quick, entertaining read. It is the fairly fast-paced tale of Rafe McKettrick, one of three brothers forced to compete to be the first to produce an heir in order to inherit a sizeable ranch, and Emmeline Harding, niece of a brothel madam, and, maybe, a prostitute, who is his mail-order bride. This novel is thick with fun, interesting characters, love (so many couples!!), and a certain amount of mystery in the shape of one "Sister Mandy" who everyone doubts is actually a nun. I look forward to seeing how marriage turns out for the other McKettrick boys.

This book made me laugh out loud. I loved how Rafe was totally in the dark about what Emmeline was doing or thinking. I laughed at the antics of Becky and her daughter. Rafe breaks your heart with his sweet, albeit misguided, offers of a hot brick and a nightgown. I totally loved this book. I really cannot explain why, it just seemed like a fun romp in the southwest. A cowboy and his mail-order bride. I haven't read much of Ms. Miller, but I do know that I will definitely be purchasing the second offering in the McKettrick series. Hopefully Ms. Miller won't stop at Kade and Jeb. I need to see a novel about Holt, too!!

A great read if you like Western historicals. The characters are well-drawn and the problems they present to each other make for a great escape from the mundane.

Can't wait to read the second in this series.

This is the first of a series by LLM, starting in the Old West and the final book is in modern day! It has been awhile since I've read this series, but I definitely remember that the whole series was excellent and a great time with a very interesting family. I would recommend the whole series to everyone!

As a Linda Lael Miller fan I am always excited when something new of hers comes out. I was not disappointed with High Country Bride. This is the first in a trilogy about three brothers who are being forced by their father to marry and father an heir if they want control of family ranch. This is difficult in a town where there are no desirable women. High Country Bride is the story of the oldest brother Rafe and his mail order bride Emmeline. This book is funny, sad and a little maddening all in one. There were times when I wanted to shake Emmeline for being so silly and others when she broke my heart. Rafe is a great hero and I look forward to his brother Kade and Jed's stories.

High Country Bride. Shotgun Bride. Second Hand Bride. I love these kinds of history stories about the old west. I was raised on a ranch and I know all the hardships, dangers and disappointments that can happen. Loved all four McKettrick cowboy sons and especially Angus the dear roughneck dad who taught his boys to be strong, compassionate and gentle.

A wonderful start to Linda Miller's McKettrick series. Loved the Mail-order bride storyline. Rafe is determined to win the competition and inherit the Triple M ranch. You'll laugh and at times want to hit Rafe over the head. I have read all the McKettrick series and enjoyed them all, have even read some of them twice.

Would love to see more of the McKettrick's.

Ok, it's a little forumulaic but done sooo well it's endearing and it pulls you into the story. Set in the 1880's a clue-less cowboy type Raf desides to send away for a mail order bride. He's hunky, sexy and in for a surprise when he mets our heroine. It's a feel good story.

Rafe a little slow on the up take is not slow in ordering himself a wife by mail order to gain control over the family ranch. Emmeline afraid that she has gone the way of her Aunt becomes a mail order bride. She was married by proxy and left to meet her new groom. This is a fun book to read and you will like it. You experience all of your emotions with this tale of Rafe and Emmeline. By Ruth Thompson the author of "Natchez Above The River"

This was my first read for this author. Although it did not rank with my favorites, it was an enjoyable read. It began well but half-way through I had the ending figured out. I will still buy the the next in the series to see what happens with Rafe's other brothers!

I have read a lot of romance novels in my day but I truly enjoyed this one. Rafe was a great character and I got so involved in the book I wanted to cry right along with Emmeline. I especially like the fact that nobody knows Angus's secret. I can't wait for the next two books. Although I'm not sure if they'll be about Jeb, Kade, or Holt. What do you say Ms. Miller about four instead of a trilogy.

This is a great book to open up the McKettrick Cowboy trilogy. I have ordered the rest of the books that Ms. Miller has penned for the McKettrick family. Can't wait to read them also. I am going to strongly recommend Ms. Miller to others, and pass the books that I have from her to others, and then reread them again.

I loved this book! I thought it romanic and funny and loved the way the brother's fought and made up after! I want to read about Kade, Jeb, and especially their half brother Holt. So much love in this family. I think Sister Mandy deserves one of the brother's!
