I bought this book for my grandkids. It has great artwork and is written with a sense of humor that my 4 & 6 year olds enjoy. There are many phrases that have become classic in our family and the kids love to repeat. I even bought a copy for myself so I could read it to them over the phone and they could follow along. I would recommend it for anyone who enjoys reading to younger children.

My mom loves watching the critters outside her back window - but also hates the harm they bring to her plants. But she keeps on feeding them...this cute children's book showcases that same love-hate relationships between a grumpy old man, the birds he loves, and the squirrels he comes to love - those ornery squirrels...

I ordered 2 of these for Christmas gifts for my youngest grandchildren, a grandson 9 years of age and a granddaughter who is 8. They both loved them and both were able to read by themselves. I think the reason they loved them so much was because it reminded them of their papa. My husband has bird feeders scattered over the back yard and is continually trying to figure out how to keep the squirrels from eating all the birdseed.

The print on kindle is very tiny. I couldn't get the
wording to expand big enough to share with a child.
The illustrations weren't captivating at all.
The story would have been OK if it wasn't truly
ridiculous. I would not want a child to try to learn
anything from this in early childhood which is the age
this story targets.

Those Darn Squirrels might resonate with many adults who have had problems with these clever and persistent creatures. Rubin and his ilustrator Salmieri portray their human character Old Man Fookwire as a grumpy, skinny old man who never smiles. He even hates pies and puppies! Fookwire's only pleasure is painting birds, and he is saddened every autumn when they fly south for the winter. He places all sorts of colorful bird feeders around his home to attract them. Fookwire is disheartened when the squirrels steal their seeds and berries. So Fookwire goes to the hardware store to concoct an elaborate contraption to frustrate the squirrels and entice the birds to remain. At first he is unsuccessful. Will he defeat the squirrels and succeed in keeping his birds at home? The characters in the story will teach the reader lessons while amusing them in the process. The humor is a bit off beat; children from ages four through seven will be attracted to it. The colorful illustrations are well drawn, but the art is cartoonish and stylized. I did find the text in the kindle version very small and difficult to read.
★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
huling
This book is not appropriate for children. The main character is Mr. Fookwire. My first thought when reading the character name was the author was getting a good chuckle out of every parent trying to pronounce that name without it sounding like a swear word. the store needs to put some different reviewers in the book club department.

low-brow and crass makes it inappropriate for kids. mr fookwire, really? slow, boring storyline sinks it six feet under. illustrations, nice though.

Bought it as a joke for my brother who hates squirrels - he is 60, but this isn't even a good book for kids.

I did not enjoy this book. I should have known by the title. My son loves the Dragons Live Tacos book by the same author. I love it too. We thought we would like this one. However, I personally thought it inappropriate for kids. That is a very personal perspective. Not all will agree. We did not keep this book.

We loved the other books in this series and my son was so excited to get this book. It was great until we got to the pictures of the squirrels' butts with the wedgies. I had no desire to explain to my 4-year old what that was. Not a good book.

thought it would be in hard cover. maybe i was mistaken. very cute story line tho. would recommend it to others.

This is a terrible book for young children to read and grow up their entire lives fearing cats. It doesn't speak kindly of older men either. I do not want to perpetuate what we were taught as children to fear animals or people as they age. It makes me question the writers motives. After all it is a Children's book.

My son LOVED "Dragons Love Tacos" by the same author and illustrator, but this book was SUPER disappointing. We couldn't even finish it, it was soooo boring and lame. I HIGHLY recommend "Dragons Love Tacos", but steer CLEAR of this one.

I got this book because my grandson loves squirrels. The first words out of my mouth was "Are you kidding me". I wear reading glasses and still couldn't see the words. I was disappointed and so was my grandson when we had to read another book. Couldn't even tell you what the stories about. Get out your magnifying glass, your going to need it.

It's really irresponsible to develop content that has no regard to the development needs of kids. the store should also vet content better that this. If you want your child to become a bully and learn bad behavior, this book is for you.

I did not realize I wasn't buying an actual book until it was too late. Would have reading it to my grand kids. : (

***All questions answered by my 4 year old***

Do you like this book?
Yeah! Because the darn squirrels were darn! And the old man got happy because they turned into birds!

What's your favorite part of the book?
Momma reads it. And it's so funny. I was laughing when the old man said he didn't like puppies. Because I like puppies! It made me feel silly!

What do you think of the cover?
I like it because of the squirrels. I want squirrels in the house.

Do you want me to read it again?
Yeah!

What Momma Thinks...
This is a really silly book. Finn was giggling the entire time and kept yelling out "Darn squirrels!" He said he really likes puppies and squirrels, but not the birds. The art is kind of funny looking, but I guess it fits the book.

You probably are thinking about buying this because of "Those Darn Squirrels." You're probably under pressure from your young ones. While I highly recommend Those Darn Squirrels I don't really recommend this book. It's OK, but not really worth it.

My kids and I enjoyed Dragons Love Tacos (a lot), and liked Those Darn Squirrels, but I was frankly less than impressed with this one. It's a personal thing, so please take my opinion as you like. The humor was a little too crass for me to enjoy reading this to my three year old. I thought that the behavior of the other animals toward the cat was morally ambiguous at best. I think if there were more of a strong moral high ground on the part of one group I'd feel better about the humor. I just didn't feel it was an appropriate read for my kids.

This book is super cute and hilarious! My 3.5 year old son loves it! And it's perfect for his age because it's a little more in depth and wordy than the toddler books he was used to, but it's not too long either. There is a real story in this book, and by using humor, it easily keeps my son engaged in the story. The pictures are also cute and kinda funny so we like to analyze what the squirrels are doing in each picture. My son thinks its hysterical that the squirrels are doing the "walk like an Egyptian" dance at the party at the end of the book. We find something new and silly in the pictures every time we read it. This book also uses some great vocabulary and it has helped my son to learn some new words.

Overall, we love this book and would definitely recommend it for any pre-school or elementary school aged child!

This is a pretty funny book, one that is fun to read, even repeatedly. My kids ask for it all the time, at least once I figured out what it meant when they requested a muffin. The illustrations are cute, and I love the bird names.

a few things I wish I had seen before I read it to my 2 and 3 year old. Not a big deal, but a heads up is always nice
1) a couple of language things. Muffins is called "a real jerk." Hardly bad language, but my kids don't know that word yet, we just skip it. Also, I don't know how it escaped me since it's in the title, but "darn" is used repeatedly. Another word that is not really a problem, but I'e rather they not pick it up, so they just think the book is about "those squirrels"
2) I intercepted my 3 year old giving my 2 year old his very first wedgie shortly after our first reading.
3)this was my admittedly sheltered kids' first exposure to a bullying theme. They were totally baffled by the cat's behavior, and it definitely sparked a discussion.

Obviously, none of things bother me enough to keep me from reading this cute book to my kids. They are just things I wish I had known before reading it to them for the first time. It's my own fault for not doing a preread, but maybe this will be helpful to others. I might have saved it until they were 4 had I known about them before the kids fell in love

Kids use the catch phrase, "Those darn squirrels!" while shaking their fists on a daily basis. Quirky story thats just odd enough to stick in their brains and manifest in unexpected times, like parent teacher conferences and play dates. This story has been on our family's short list of favorites for the last year and a half. When the pages finally disintegrate, I'll probably buy another copy for ol' times sake.

You can't blame them for not being able to write a book as good as Dragons Love Tacos. But this book, although not bad, just does not capture the perfect feelings evoked by DLT. DLT simply hit a grand slam homerun... kids remember the phrasing and the cadence and the punch lines basically forever.
Those Darn Squirrels misses the mark in a lot of ways. Still moderately entertaining. But I will probably read Squirrels to my kid a total of maybe 12-20 times over her whole childhood, whereas Dragons Love Tacos might realistically be on reading number 300-400.

I was not a fan of this one. Basically, the new cat next door is a bully, and the squirrels and birds eventually gang up on him to get revenge. I don't mind reading books to my kids that don't necessarily have a moral or lesson, but this book didn't even have any redeeming qualities. Plus, I found some of the material questionable for young children. (Explaining what a wet willy or a wedgie is to my 5-year-old--no thank you!) I probably won't be picking up any more of these books.

There’s a page in here where the main character is throwing out a pie and kicking a puppy out of his house and if I could bottle up the hour of laughing and giggling that that single page elicited from my 5 year old son, I would. We’ve read this book over and over. It’s a definite all time favorite.

But for the disturbing nose of old man Fookwire this is an enjoyable book.

However, we must deal with this distressing schnozola in no less that ten images throughout the book. It is very long, very red, and very pointy.

Fookwire is a lonely and unhappy man whose only joy in life is the backyard birds. These he loves dearly, and he spends his time painting pictures of them. Otherwise, there's not much to endear him to anyone - he hates puppies, pie, and presumably many other things.

But is it necessary to portray him with this most disgusting snout?

Otherwise, the illustrations by Daniel Salmieri are absolutely delightful. The squirrels who disturb the peace and harmony of Fookwire's yard are a particular joy. Each one has an industrious and expressive face as it goes about plotting madcap raids on the old man's bird feeders.

The birds too are a pleasure to behold. They come in all sizes, shapes, and colors. No wonder Fookwire never tires of painting them...

The accompanying text is also memorable. For example, a description of the capabilities of squirrels: " Not many people know this, but squirrels are the cleverest of all woodland creatures. In fact, they're fuzzy little geniuses! They can make a house out of a tree, a bed out of a bunch of leaves, and a box kite out of twigs, dirt and squirrel spit". Is the box kite a bit over the top? Perhaps, but we also learn that "They are also excellent at math".

Author Adam Rubin tells a funny tale of bad guys who are really good guys, forgiveness, resourcefulness, and happy endings all around.

There's just one problem.

The nose.

This is a very original and funny plot. The squirrels are the bane of an old man's existence because they eat the bird food. The old man is lonely and likes to feed and paint the birds. The squirrels may scare them away.

The squirrels are pretty ingenious and figure out a way to make friends with the old man The plot is fun and has some dramatic tension and symmetry. Kids should enjoy the humor.

This book is very funny - I wouldn't expect any less from Adam Rubin though. He has a way of making an ordinary subject exciting and different.
My Family Loves Dragons Love Tacos and Secret Pizza Party as well.

We recently got the newest version of this book (Those Darn Squirrels and the Cat Next Door) and am looking forward to reading it.

Those Darn Squirrels is so funny because the characters are hilarious! Old Man Fookwire is really, really old and he always shakes his fist and says, "Those darn squirrels!" Old Man Fookwire loves birds so much and he even looks like one! I think the squirrels are the silliest characters because they try to get through the lasers. In part of the story the squirrels are fat because they eat too much food. The author describes squirrels as the smartest woodland creatures because they make all sorts of things. You have to read this book because it will make you laugh!

I ordered several children's book for my toddler this Christmas. I hated one book so much, I returned it. However, THIS book totally made up for it. She sat still and didn't make a peep throughout the entire story (that is a friggin miracle)... and it made me smile a few times, too. I will definitely buy the other squirrel stories!

This is a cute book with colorful pages, both of my kids age 3, 5 like it. As a parents it's not one of my more favorite books to read to them but it's better than a lot of other children's books out there. My kids ask for it to be read to them so overall I would buy it again.
