I did like this textbook, it made me understand some concepts. It would be useful to buy another supplement Finance book if you want to understand all the concepts.

The book is very helpful for class. I never have any questions regarding homework or anything that the book itself cannot answer. I think the value of this book is way over stated however, because the content in this book is not that in depth. Overall a very nice book to have though, just wish I didn't have to pay as much as I did.

This was my text book for my Corporate Finance class while getting my MBA. I am 45 years old and do not have a finance background beyond what I have learned in business over the last 22 years. This book did an incredible job of spelling out the more difficult topics in an understandable manner. I will keep and reference the book.

Very deceived. I wish I could have my money back. I rented this book through the store Kindle thinking I was going to get an Access code because all rentals give Access codes, but no Acess code was given. If you need this book for "reading on the go", it is excellent. But if you're a student that needs an Access code, don't get it.

Good overall text - sometimes can be too wordy and indirect on explanations. Other parts have really good examples. I would rather have a Text on Finance be more "Meat & Potatoes" than words. Show me the formula, then explain it - then give a practical example on how it is used/situationally....

I was trying to find version 7 of this book, but was only able to find version 8 on the store. The review questions at the end of each chapter are very close between versions but different. The numbers in practive problems are different between version 7 and 8 are different, so doing homework is very difficult when my instructor is using version 7.

The book is very easy to read and makes finance easy to understand.

The only great thing about this book is its small size and thats about it. The text doesn't do a very good job of explaining the ideas and concepts. Say you are given certain parts of an equation it doesn't really show you how to use to components to solve for the right number. Instead it gives you a wonderful GENERAL overview of an idea that is minimal in explanation. I'm almost at the point of flipping out because the lack of explanations and I'm only on Chapter 2.

If your class requires connect plus with this textbook, save yourself money and look somewhere else for a more affordable price.

I would rate this higher than two stars if the the book had connect +, unfortunately it does not. My professor requires me to have the connect access code for homework, and I would imagine many professors who request this book would as well.

I paid $167 for an incomplete book? Now I have to pay $50 separately for connect + to "complete" my purchase?

Why did this seller not indicate that this book does not have connect plus? If it's stated as brand new, I would guess that most people looking at this page description, seeing "new" and clicking "order" will be surprised to receive the book without connect +. Especially for that price. Jeez I'm already a broke student to begin with!

If you get the Kindle version, and the prof. assigned problems 1 - 5 on p45, good luck feeling confident you are doing the correct homework! The Kindle version does not have page numbers. Apparently software version 3.1 for the kindle does support page numbers, but only on certain books, not including this one.

This book is required for a Finance course. This is one of the worst college level textbooks I have ever been exposed to. I am taking this course as a requirement for a 3rd college degree so I have bought a few textbooks.

There are answers to every other problem and not one explanation as to how the answer was derived. Oh wait!!!, you can buy the accompanying student workbook and there are some semi-explanations there.

If this book is intended to be a teaching tool it has failed. The authors deserve an F and should reconsider themselves as "professors" or educators.

My university will hear about this total waste of money.

Authors (of this book), educators and others: feel free to contact me and I will elaborate. I will also offer suggestions and solutions to better present the material where this textbook fails. [...]

In hindsight, I probably should have realized that the book I purchased wasn't going to come with the access code for Connect plus for such a cheap price, but I was disappointed none the less. The title was misleading and I was required to spend additional money to purchase the access code for my class online. Probably my fault, but "with Connect Plus" is false advertising in my book. The book did come, after some waiting,in good condition. Which is why I gave it two stars and not one.

Let me first start out by saying, I don't want to give any stars, at all for this review but if I did that I wouldn't be able to leave this review for others to see. I don't want anyone else to encounter what I did. This is a rip off! This was the first time that I ever experienced, a rental that lasted only for 2 months. All of the books that I have previously rented, via kindle, have been for 4 months, which is the length of a class or semester. I think what you should have done is, sell this rental for twice the amount, from the beginning and for the full "common" duration, instead of renting this book for half the price and at half the normal time frame, that books of this capacity are used for. I may not have looked at the time frame, thinking that it would last for a 4 month duration, so I was surprised when this book was revoked, 2 months into my class. I believe you knew exactly what you were doing. This will eventually catch up with you. Being crooked always does! Buyers beware, I know I will be from now on!!!!!!

Shame on me for not reading the previous person's review on this product because I just wasted my money. I was under the impression that the Connect Plus came with the book and to my surprise, it doesn't. I skimmed over the description and as far as I could tell, there was no indication that it did NOT come with the software. That's an extra fifty dollars that I have to fork over on top of the book price (which when you put the two together, costs as much as one in store - brand new - that comes with Connect Plus). Shame on me for not spending countless hours researching if it came with the needed software and shame on the store/McGraw-Hill for not indicating whether it does or doesn't in BOLD lettering. Better spend my money elsewhere next time.

This book is outrageously priced, given how little has changed since the previous edition.

Here's the down low on your options:
1) The global edition (7th edition). The introductory paragraph of each chapter differs from the US edition (it gives an international example of the topic, rather than an American one). The pagination is different, but the meat of the book is identical. EXCEPT that the international edition is missing the appendix that gives select answers to end of chapter questions. So if you want to use those questions for review, then you're out of luck. If your professor is assigning questions directly from the book for you to turn in for homework, then you can use the global edition (same questions). But if at any time, your professor is relying on the fact that you have the answers in the back of your book - beware the global edition.

2) The previous American edition (6th edition). A few thing have been updated (the intro paragraphs and examples within the text) to give more recent examples from real life, but the bulk of the text is unchanged. This edition does have the appendix with select answers. The questions DO NOT have the same numbers as the 7th edition, but they are the same questions. For example, if Ch2 #3 is a question about Cash Flows in the 7th edition, it is the SAME question about Cash Flows in the 6th edition, but with different numbers. So if you're supposed to hand in homework, you won't have the correct numbers. If your professor is assigning questions only for study purposes, then you will be looking at essentially the same questions.

Bottom line: If you aren't handing in homework, the old edition is the way to go.

Very good intro book that is easy to read and easy to understand.

Book takes a very basic approach to explaining things so as students not familiar with finance can easily grasp the concepts. Use of color a nice touch compared to older black & white texts, also lots of recent events (Enron/MCI/M.Stewart) are discussed along with subtle references to Metallica, NIN, Bowie, etc...

Many hints that tie in excel and the web, even an appendix section on how to use your financial calculator. Good 'preview' book to their more exhaustive book aptly titled 'Corporate Finance'

tenley mccladdie
Excellent finance book offering just what is promised, the essentials. Examples are clearly presented with an excellent use of color coding to highlight concepts and formulas. In fact, I purchased this book as a textbook requirement for a pre-requisite finance class (as a refresher after an 8 year hiatus after my BBA). Then, when I actually ended up taking the Financial Management class as part of the MBA program, I discarded the textbook from that class and referred back to this one (got an A in the class). It's that good.
★ ☆ ☆ ☆ ☆
act towery
If this is an assigned textbook for a class, I sincerely hope you have a good teacher. We are currently using this book for my Intro to Finance class and it is awful. Fortunately, I have a great teacher so I've been able to get through the class without this book. There have been a few instances where I've tried to use the book to get clarification on something we discussed in lecture and the book was useless. Also, the book never really explains how to solve any of the end of chapter problems, so if you can't figure it out on your own, you're out of luck. From a theoretical or conceptual standpoint it's not so bad, but when you actually have to do calculations, the book is absolutely no help.
★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆
mariska
this text doesn't give an overview of the subject, nor does it do well to contrast topics to the big picture.
additionally, layout and examples make the text highly difficult to follow and stay engaged.

alternative: "principles of corporate finance" by brealey and meyers

same sequence and chapter titles, but far more palatable and interesting.

I'm an adjunct professor at a regional liberal arts university, and I admit I've not read as many textbooks as the average ivory tower dweller. That being said, I used this book (through no choice of my own) to teach an Undergraduate Intro to Finance class. Decent text, and some good explanation of the more complex ideas in the second half of the book, but what kills this as a textbook is the HORRIBLE support materials. Errors throughout the Power Point presentations, test bank questions, study problems...I was so disgusted by the end of the semester. It's probably okay as a brush-up text, but not what I'd recommend for newbies.

This book is not good for beginners. Also unless the teacher makes the students extra pay for the "McGraw Hill Connect" it is very difficult to learn from. There is no extra learning material that comes with the book on the online website either. I paid for the student edition and all I got was narrated slides that had many spelling errors and unanswered questions. I suggest getting an older edition of this book for your class. It is not much different and the online compainion site actually has some study materials that are somewhat useful.

I'm an MBA student with quite a number of courses finished. I'm over half way through the finance course that uses this book and have found it to be written very well. The example problems are great, and the explanations are thorough. Our professor did make available the answers to the questions at the back of the book and used the powerpoints developed by the author. All in all the only drawback I could find was cost (as usual with college texts). As a side note, several students did use the 4th edition in our class with the permission of the instructor and did just fine.

i think that the guide that came with my book, which shows pictures of the slides that professors are supposed to use was completely usless, if you have to purchase this book for a class, try and get a used copy. It is not worth the price you have to pay. There is another book by Breyli and Meyers titles Corporate Finance which is much more comprehensive and much better.

katie nicholson
Don't be excited about this book's small size and light weight, the text needs more examples to support you while doing homework. Breif chapter explantions caused me to nearly fail my class. Was NOT a great book, in fact many students complained to the Dean of Students at my school regarding this book. Good luck.

Update: this was the only textbook I ever reviewed, it must have been horrible!
★ ★ ☆ ☆ ☆

I used the book for Intro to finance in my undergraduate studies. The book is very poor at explaining key concepts in finance. Now that I have taken several finance classes I can say with certainty that I do not recommend this book.

The examples in each chapter add little in understanding the underlying concepts. For example some of the problems at the end of chapter on time value of money are complex, and unless you have the answers from the professor you will probably be unable to answer them correctly using the information given in the chapter. Its explanation of the SML line, WACC and BETA, all key concepts for beginners, is similarly vague and not thorough enough to give them a good grasp of financial concepts.

The book does not do a very good job of simplifying concepts in a way that makes them understandable for Intro Finance students. I would recommend other introductory finance books in its place that do a better job of trying to help students to really learn the material by giving more clear examples in the chapter text.

This book is a requirement for a class I am taking, I have failed the class before since all the concepts are not explained, the writters use an entire paragraph to talk about how a concept changed in time, but does not explain how a concept helps you solve a problem. The class that uses this book at my University has a great percentage of failing students each semmester. Examples are provided but none explain the steps. On the other hand, I had to buy another book and review the concepts on the internet. What I found is that the book is a complete waste and that even wikipedia explains the concepts in an better and straight fashion. That is, you can read one hour and try to understand a concept in the book or search somewhere else and spend 30 minutes.

If you have to buy this book, I recommend that you read the concepts from another text or the web. And do your own examples, examples provided by the text are confusing, is like reading a book from the 1900s, imagine you trying to decipher all the book?

This book is an extremely simplified, dumbed down, introduction to finance text book. It appears Ross writes three different introduction level text books, this one, "Essentials" looks to be the briefest. Best used by a person would wants only a cursory understanding. One advantage, if you already understand the subject a class using this book will require less of your time.
